Getting your degree in an IT-related field is no small feat. Not only is it a mad dash to the finish for many of us, but then we get sacked with the life-long sin of being "that guy". Now I'm not trying to engender our female homies out there in the trenches with us, but we're all "that guy".
What does "that guy" do?
Printer Administrator
Network Administrator
Internet Administrator
Printer Ink Installer
Printer Paper Replacer
Smart Home Administrator
Minecraft Administrator
Each of these have their own demands and stakeholders and by the merit of we're all in the same house, there's no preplanning for any of it.
The homework needs to be printed?!? Well it just so happens that the printer hasn't been used since the last time homework needed to be printed or a recipe was printed out, hence it is in deep sleep.
I don't know anyone who ever smiles when using a printer, except for HP when they abuse their DRM for record profits.
In the middle of watching Netflix or Disney+? (if you're a family with kids, Disney+ is almost a requirement now, thanks Bluey!), you might get that dreaded waiting circle. Now you're "that guy" in charge of addressing local network issues and issues that are plaguing the Internet world-wide (good luck!).
If you have this or something similar, good luck!
Congratulations to you "guys". You've made it into the 2020's, the legacy and build up of the 20 aughts and 2010s: Smart Devices and Smart Homes! You have no doubt inherited the Christmas gifts, the thoughtful last minute birthday purchases, the Prime Day specials. Your network probably looks something like mine:
You are the network administrator for school distributed iPads, cheaper-than-dirt Amazon Fire tablets, smart watches, and your visiting in-laws smart phones or smart baggage they bring with them every visit.
As you struggle with these everyday demands, know that you aren't alone and that at some point we're all "that guy"
24 devices! Had to check and turns out that is just above the american average of 22 in 2022 (down from 25 in 2021) [https://www2.deloitte.com/us/en/pages/about-deloitte/articles/press-releases/connectivity-and-mobile-trends.html] Maybe we need home IT training in school...
